Home > Outer Rim Boardwalk

What was an off-limits area has reopened for the first time in the 27 years since the 1977 eruption.
As a result of integrating the Nature Trail Plan of the national government and the Ecomuseum Plan of the surrounding municipalities, a 1.1-km (30-minute) walking path was completed between the crater basin observation deck and junction of the Outer Rim Boardwalk and the hiking trail at UsuTown.
Walk ten more minutes and youfll reach the Outer Rim Observation Deck, with views of the crater, Lake Toya and the Pacific Ocean.
Because the walking path has connected with the hiking trail at Usu Town, Date City, it enjoys popularity as an easy hiking course traversing the outer rim of Mt. Usu .
Closed in winter (Nov.-Apr.) due to snow

Opened in Oct. 2004
