Mt. Usuzan, a World-famous Active Volcano
Situated behind Toya-ko (Lake Toya), which is renown as one of the superior hot spring areas in Hokkaido,
stands majestic Mt. Usuzan which rises to a height of 729 meters and is
marked by a rugged, bare rock surface created by numerous past eruptions.
The ropeway carries visitors up to the top of Mt. Usuzan where two observation
decks are located. One is the Toya-ko Tenbodai (Lake Toya Observation Deck),
from which you can command an excellent bird's-eye view of Lake Toya and
Mt. Showa Shinzan.
The other is the Usu Kakogen Tenbodai (Usu Crater Basin Observation Deck) which is located 300 meters away, or a seven-minute walk from the ropeway station, from which you can observe the largest crater basin in the area.
