Mt. Daisetsu National Park is situated almost at the center of Hokkaido and comprises a total area of 230,000 ha, making it the largest national park in Japan in terms of land area.
Though the peaks of the mountain range reach only a height of some 2,000m above sea level, the alpine environment is similar to the 3,000m-class mountains found on the main island of Honshu due to its northern latitude location.

Points to be noted about ropeway fares for ski visitors:
  * The scheduled ski season runs from December 1 to May 6
(this is subject to change depending on snowfall conditions).
  * The 4-hour Pass and One-day Pass are valid for use on up-bound gondolas only
(may not be used on descending gondolas).
  * The adult One-day Pass is a common pass that can also be used at Canmore Ski Village.
Regarding Summer-season Skiing:
The Asahidake Ropeway is closed from May 7-18 every year to allow for scheduled maintenance and system check. From May 19 and onward skiing/snowboarding is prohibited due to the following reasons:
    1. There is inadequate amount of snowfall on the Ski Course during this season,
        making it impossible to ski/snowboard.
    2. Also, as this season coincides with the blossoming of alpine plant species etc.,
snow activities are banned to preserve the local environment in the Daisetsu Mountain
       Range system.
Skis, snowboards and other such equipment is prohibited inside of the gondolas, except during the official ski season.
In the past there have been incidences where people have hiked from the Sancho Station and headed to the remaining snows on the mountain (outside of the designated Ski Course Area) to ski/snowboard on the leftover snow cover during this season. However, such activities cause damage to alpine plant species and other parts of nature. Those of us at the Asahidake Ropeway believe that the policy of banning ski/snowboard equipment inside of the gondolas is an integral part of protecting the alpine flora that inhabit the Daisetsu Mountain Range system. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
